As is usually the case I had planned it all out on the computer. 10 days of simple living out of a tent, and finding myself on a bicycle. My itinerary was to take me through Summit County, Monarch Pass, Telluride, and Moab with friends in each location.
First stop was Keystone for some closing weekend resort riding. Despite the new trail opening my riding buddy Luke and I decided to head over the local dirt jumps, Wildernest. I had never been and boy was I pleasantly surprised. This is truly a unique and entertaining spot with man made jumps making the most of natural features. Lots of variety. Looking forward to getting out there again.
Next it was on to Maysville to camp for the night.
Maysville is conveniently located near Monarch Pass a popular Colorado shuttle trail. The local bike shop runs a commercial shuttle up and down the pass for a reasonable price but Mark and I decided to run our own shuttle and hit up a couple routes that are more DH bike friendly. We rode Greens and North Foosis with Greens being the favorite of the day. It’s a rough and long trail with lots of baby heads and loose boulders. Great for a DH bike, but probably pretty slow on a trail bike.
Next it was on to Telluride for some high alpine shuttles, and passing the time with close friends. There is something truly special about a first snow in a ski town and it was a great feeling to be there for this years event. Special thanks to the Telluride paragliding club for shuttling us to the top of Gold Hill.
The road from Telluride to Moab reminds me of the movie U Turn by Oliver Stone. The towns have this eerie abandoned quaintness to them and the terrain is surreal.
And finally I arrive at the mountain biking mecca of Moab. I was new to the experience of riding in Moab but quickly had more than I could handle as we boarded the shuttle for Borro Pass. The ride is long with lots of vertical relief but not all of it down. I spent the day pushing my 40lb single ring bike around but in the end still had a blast.
